Gay Musical A Strange Loop Wins Big at the 2022 Tony Awards

Broadway’s back in full swing, and that was made abundantly clear at the 75th Tony Awards that were held this past Sunday.
While it did receive as many as 11 nominations, A Strange Loop still arrived at the 2022 Tonys as an underdog considering its queer-centric plot and its fierce competition with productions such as Company and MJ.
Despite not winning most of those nominations, A Strange Loop still won big at the Tonys. First, Michael R. Jackson won Best Book of a Musical and talked about the importance of injecting “quality” into LGBTQ+ stories on the stage and in the media.
Then, to close the ceremony, A Strange Loop won what is arguably the biggest award of the night, Best Musical, beating out other productions such as Girl from the North Country, MJ, Mr. Saturday Night, Paradise Square, and Six.

This historic night also included the nomination of A Strange Loop‘s L. Morgan Lee for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, making her the first-ever transgender person to be nominated for a Tony award. Lee ultimately lost the award to Patti LuPone for her performance in Company – but LuPone was a shoo-in to win this category anyway.
Other categories that A Strange Loop lost at the 2022 Tony Awards include Best Original Score, Best Featured Actor in a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical, and Best Orchestrations.
Alas, the point remains that this very queer musical walked out of the Tonys with the biggest trophy of the night: Best Musical.
A Strange Loop is currently on Broadway.
